The problem with a blank box
Most people cannot describe a good headshot or a good photo shoot in words, but they recognise one straight away. An empty prompt asks them to do the hard part, and when the result disappoints, they blame the app. In an app where every result costs a credit, a disappointing result is also a wasted purchase.
What each app does instead
- JobShot offers more than 100 professional styles, outfits and hairstyles. Each one is a template the generation follows: it carries the lighting, the framing and the clothes, and the person brings only their face.
- Bite splits the decision in two: a style preset for the look, and a shot template for the framing and pose. Two simple choices describe a finished image well enough to generate it.
- AI Avatar shows each style in a discovery feed of finished examples, so people choose a look they have already seen rather than a name such as “3D” or “comic”.
What templates give you
- Predictable results. The template sets the expectation before anyone pays.
- Fewer steps. Choosing is faster than writing, especially on a phone.
- Easier localisation. Templates are visual, so only the interface text needs translating. JobShot is available in 20 languages.
- Easier safety. A narrower range of possible results is easier to filter, which matters more since Apple’s October 2026 guideline update.
- Quality you can curate. Most of the quality is decided by the templates, so improving the library improves every result.
What they cost
Templates are product work. Someone has to design them, test them and keep adding to them, and the library becomes the thing people judge the app by. A prompt box is cheaper to build and much harder to make feel good.
When a prompt makes sense
A prompt suits people who already know what they want and have the words for it: designers, illustrators, experienced users. For a consumer app whose promise is “a great photo of you”, we would start from templates every time, and add a prompt later only if people ask for one.
