The brief
Couples talk every day, mostly about logistics. Soul is for the other conversations: getting to know each other, staying close across a distance, or saying something that has never come up. It works for new couples, long-distance relationships, date nights and quiet evenings in.
Content is the product
In a content app, the writing is the feature. Soul’s 1,500 questions are organised into ten categories of 150, each with its own register: Love Check-In for light daily questions, Deep Talks for meaningful conversation starters, Long Distance for love across the miles, Sweet Memories for reliving the best moments, and on to more intimate categories such as Romantic Sparks and Secret Wishes. Some of those deal with intimacy, and the app is rated 17+.
Categories do more than organise. They let a couple choose the mood of an evening before they see a single question, which makes the first card feel chosen rather than random.
Small mechanics, carefully tuned
The interface is simple: pick a category and swipe through the cards. What makes it a habit is a set of small mechanics:
- Favourites, to keep the questions worth coming back to.
- Shareable cards, so any question can be sent to a partner as an image.
- A daily streak and badges, with reminders that keep working even after a break.
Version 1.7, released in September 2026, shows what tuning those mechanics looks like. One missed day no longer resets a streak. Couples see every question in a category before any comes back. Favouriting a question keeps it on screen instead of skipping ahead. And the app opens straight into the questions. None of these is a headline feature; together they decide whether people come back tomorrow.
Fully offline
Soul works completely offline. The questions travel with the app, so it works on a plane, in a cabin or anywhere a couple wants their phones to be about each other rather than the internet. For a content app this is also the simplest architecture there is: no server to wait for and nothing to load before the first card.
Ten languages
Soul is available in English, Turkish, Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Italian, Japanese, Korean and Simplified Chinese. For a content app, localisation is not just the buttons: questions about feelings have to read naturally in each language, which makes it closer to writing than translation.
Free every day, Premium for everything
- Free: 10 questions a day in two categories, unlimited favourites, streaks, badges and shareable cards.
- Soul Premium: all ten categories, no daily limit and every one of the 1,500 questions, as a weekly or yearly subscription, or a one-time Lifetime purchase.
The same 1.7 update added the Lifetime option and a three-day free trial on the weekly plan. Offering a one-time purchase next to a subscription suits a content library people may want to own rather than rent, and it is exactly the kind of change a paywall should keep getting. See paywall best practices.
What we would bring to a project like it
- Organise content by mood, so people choose the kind of experience before the item.
- Forgive missed days. A streak that punishes one lapse loses people instead of keeping them.
- Do not repeat until everything is seen. Repeats make a large library feel small.
- Go offline when the content allows it. Faster, more private and simpler to run.
- Offer a way to own it. A Lifetime option beside a subscription suits content people return to.
